After providing all the funding for The Brain from Top to Bottom for over 10 years, the CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction informed us that because of budget cuts, they were going to be forced to stop sponsoring us as of March 31st, 2013.

We have approached a number of organizations, all of which have recognized the value of our work. But we have not managed to find the funding we need. We must therefore ask our readers for donations so that we can continue updating and adding new content to The Brain from Top to Bottom web site and blog.

Please, rest assured that we are doing our utmost to continue our mission of providing the general public with the best possible information about the brain and neuroscience in the original spirit of the Internet: the desire to share information free of charge and with no adverstising.

Whether your support is moral, financial, or both, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

4 New RSS Feeds for Recent News About the Brain

As you may have noticed, last week we added a new feature to The Brain from Top to Bottom Blog to help you follow the latest news in the vast field of neuroscience. I’m talking about the four RSS feeds now appearing in the left-hand column under the heading “RECENT NEWS ABOUT THE BRAIN”.

RSS stands for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication, and an RSS feed is a service that informs you about the latest content published on a particular blog or other web site. For example, if you really like a certain blog and it offers an RSS feed, you can subscribe to that feed so that you will be notified automatically whenever the author publishes something new on it, instead of your having to go to the blog itself. And that’s exactly what we’ve done here. We’ve subscribed to the feeds from four web sites that offer especially interesting neuroscience content, and presented these feeds—a list of the five most recent posts from each of these sources—in our “RECENT NEWS ABOUT THE BRAIN” section.

To visit each of these sites, simply click its name under “RECENT NEWS ABOUT THE BRAIN”. Here is a brief summary of each of them.

Deric Bownds’ Mindblog In the 1990s, having spent nearly 35 years doing research on the biochemistry of vision and thus providing us with a better understanding of the human visual system, Dr. Bownds began devoting his time to developing a broader synthesis on the evolution, development, and functioning of the brain. He has been sharing the results of this work with his readers in this blog almost every day since 2006.

BrainFacts.org Blog This is the blog of BrainFacts.org, a general-audience web site published by the Society for Neuroscience, the largest association of neuroscience researchers in North America. Since November 2012, a small group of scientists from this association have been publishing several posts per week on this blog to tell readers about studies that have caught their attention.

Brain Science Podcast This blog was created in December 2006 by Dr. Ginger Campbell, an emergency physician with a longstanding interest in the brain, in consciousness, and in what make us human. Every month she presents a podcast comprising nearly an hour of interviews and discussions of recent books on various aspects of neuroscience, all in language accessible to the general public.

Alltop Neuroscience: Alltop is a web site that aggregates RSS feeds from numerous reference sites on a wide variety of topics. Its Neuroscience page presents the RSS feeds from some 30 different neuroscience web sites and blogs (including our own). One of its best features is a box called Most Topular Stories that presents the top five stories of the moment, which are almost always fascinating. (The five stories that we show here under Alltop Neuroscience come from this list.)

These four RSS feeds complement one another in their frequency of publication, with updates ranging from once per month to several times per day. This means that, in addition to our own weekly posts, The Brain from Top To Bottom Blog now gives you links to 20 of the most interesting recent studies on the brain (4 RSS feeds x 5 titles per feed) and updates these links in real time. This makes us an even better way of keeping up to date on neuroscience than ever before!
